Leavenworth works as a day trip from Seattle if you leave early. The Bavarian-style village sits about two and a half hours east on US-2, over Stevens Pass. In October you get turning leaves along the highway and the Wenatchee River, and on three weekends, Oktoberfest on Front Street.

It's a long day, so the plan keeps the town compact: a river walk in the morning, the main street and a small museum around lunch, and an early start back so most of the mountain driving happens in daylight. Everything except the drive is within a 15-minute walk.

The plan at a glance: a Saturday from 7:30 am to about 8 pm · about 5 hours of driving, 7 hours in town · about $70–80 per person without Oktoberfest, or about $110–120 with a Saturday festival ticket · free to walk the village.

The drive over Stevens Pass

US-2 is the only real road for this trip: through Monroe and the Skykomish River valley, up over the 4,061-foot Stevens Pass and down through Tumwater Canyon into Leavenworth. Plan on about two and a half hours each way without traffic, more on festival weekends.

The east side of the pass is the best part of the fall drive. Tumwater Canyon follows the river for the last stretch into town, and in mid-October the cottonwoods and maples along it turn yellow and orange.

Check the WSDOT Stevens Pass report before you leave and again before you head home. Snow can arrive at the summit by late October, and traction tire advisories can come with it. Keep a full tank from Monroe: services thin out between Skykomish and the pass.

Cost: fuel for a typical car is about $45–55 for the round trip, or $25 per person for two.

Oktoberfest 2026: dates, tickets and who can go

The Leavenworth Oktoberfest runs on three weekends in 2026: October 2–3, 9–10 and 16–17. Gates open at 6 pm on Fridays and at noon on Saturdays, and close at midnight. Advance tickets are $20 for Friday, $40 for Saturday and $50 for the weekend, plus service fees; the box office also sells same-day tickets until they're gone.

Children up to age 12 are admitted free, and the main Festhalle has a Kinderplatz for them, but anyone under 21 must leave by 9 pm, and the beer garden in Front Street Park is 21+ only. No one gets into a venue after 10 pm.

Saturdays have the best free parts. The Festzug parade moves through town at 11:45 am, and the keg tapping happens at 2 pm in Front Street Park. You don't need a ticket to watch the parade or walk Front Street.

Not into crowds? The two Saturdays after the festival, October 24 and 31, give you the same fall color with far fewer people.

A Saturday in Leavenworth, hour by hour

This route uses Saturday, October 10 or 17, when the festival is on. Without it, the times work the same way.

1. 7:30 am — Leave Seattle. Coffee on the way in Monroe, then the pass. Cost: fuel, shared.

2. 10:00 am — Waterfront Park and Blackbird Island. Park early: on festival Saturdays the lots fill well before noon. Walk down to Waterfront Park and the loop around Blackbird Island, where the Wenatchee River runs clear over the stones and the mountains rise behind the trees. It's the quiet half-hour that the rest of the day won't give you. Cost: free.

3. 11:30 am — Front Street and the Festzug. Walk up to Front Street in time for the parade at 11:45 am. Then browse the main street: the gazebo, the painted buildings and shops selling everything from nutcrackers to sausages. Cost: free.

4. 12:30 pm — Lunch on Front Street. Bratwurst, schnitzel or a pretzel and mustard are the local defaults, and several places along Front Street serve them all day. Eat before the 2 pm festival rush. Cost: about $18–25 per person.

5. 1:30 pm — The Nutcracker Museum, 735 Front Street. A small, oddly charming museum with thousands of nutcrackers, some centuries old. Admission is $5 for adults, $2 for ages 6–16 and free under 6; it's open 11 am–5 pm Monday to Saturday and 11 am–4:30 pm on Sundays. Cost: $5.

6. 2:30 pm — Oktoberfest, or a slow afternoon. If you have Saturday tickets, the keg tapping in Front Street Park starts things off at 2 pm and the Festhalle carries on into the evening. Without tickets, find a patio, an ice cream or an apple cider and watch the town fill up. Cost: $40 with a festival ticket.

7. 4:45 pm — Head home. Leaving now gets you over the pass before full dark (the sun goes down a little after 6 in mid-October), with time for one stop. Fruit stands along US-2 between Peshastin and Cashmere sell apples, pears and cider in October. Cost: about $5–15 if you stop.

8. About 8:00 pm — Back in Seattle. Cost: included in fuel.

If you'd rather stay the night

A day trip suits Oktoberfest only if one of you skips the beer and drives. If you both want to stay at the festival into the evening, book a room in town and treat it as a two-day trip: the free Leavenworth Shuttle connects hotels with the center, and Sunday morning on the river is the calmest part of the weekend.

Rooms on festival weekends book up months ahead, so check availability before you buy Saturday tickets.

What to know before you go

Leavenworth's Christmas lights season starts on Thanksgiving weekend, and it is a very different trip, with more traffic over the pass and much more snow. We'll cover it in a separate winter plan.

Bring layers. October mornings in Leavenworth are often in the 40s, warming to the 60s by afternoon, and the river path is cooler than Front Street.

Before you go: Oktoberfest dates, hours and ticket prices and the Nutcracker Museum's hours and admission were checked on official pages in October 2026. Fuel and food costs are estimates. Check the pass report on the day you drive.

FAQ

Is Leavenworth worth a day trip from Seattle?

Yes, if you leave early. Leaving Seattle around 7:30 am puts you in town by mid-morning, with six or seven hours to spend before the drive back over Stevens Pass. That is enough for the river walk, Front Street, lunch and a museum, or for an afternoon at Oktoberfest on a festival weekend.

When is Leavenworth Oktoberfest 2026?

The festival takes the first three weekends of October 2026: the 2nd–3rd, 9th–10th and 16th–17th. Friday nights start in the evening and Saturdays at midday; buying ahead costs $20 for a Friday, $40 for a Saturday or $50 for both, and kids up to 12 pay nothing.

Can kids go to Leavenworth Oktoberfest?

Yes, until evening. There's a dedicated children's area in the Festhalle and no charge for kids 12 or younger, but under-21s must be out of the venues by 9 pm, and the Front Street Park beer garden admits adults only.

What is the best time to see fall colors near Leavenworth?

Fall color along Tumwater Canyon and the Wenatchee River usually peaks from early to late October, depending on the weather. Mid-October often gives the best mix of color and dry weather, before the first snow reaches Stevens Pass.

Is Stevens Pass safe to drive in October?

Usually, yes, but conditions change fast in late October. Snow and traction tire advisories are possible at the summit, especially at night. Look up current conditions from WSDOT on the morning of the trip and again before the return, and aim to be over the summit before dark.
