October is when Phoenix gives the outdoors back. The best way to spend a weekend is to start each day with a hike or a walk while it's cool, spend the warm middle hours indoors with art or lunch, and come back out for sunset, which in October lands around 6 pm and lights up the whole valley.
After a summer of staying inside, it's tempting to cram everything into one Saturday. Don't. This plan gives you two unhurried days for two adults: a summit and a museum on Saturday, a garden at golden hour with dinner inside it, and a slow Sunday by the water in Tempe.
The plan at a glance: Saturday 6:30 am to 9 pm, Sunday 8 am to 2 pm · 6 main stops · about $300–380 for two plus museum admission · two outdoor windows each day, nothing outdoors at 2 pm.

How warm is Phoenix in October, really
Early October can still bring days in the 90s; as the month closes, highs often settle in the 80s and mornings drop into the 60s. That is why the hike goes first and the garden waits for the last two hours of light.
Arizona doesn't use daylight saving time, so sunset moves earlier quickly: about 6:10 pm at the start of October and around 5:40 pm by Halloween. A plan that worked in September will leave you walking in the dark by month's end, so check the time on the day.
Saturday: a summit, a museum and a garden at sunset
1. 6:30 am — Piestewa Peak Summit Trail. In the Phoenix Mountains Preserve, the summit trail climbs roughly 1,100 feet in about 1.2 miles to one of the best views over the city. It is steep and rocky, so bring water even on a cool morning and turn around if it feels like too much: the view from the saddle is good too. Parking lots fill early on fall weekends. Cost: free.
2. 9:00 am — Breakfast nearby. Biltmore and Arcadia both have breakfast spots within 10 minutes of the trailhead. Eat well: lunch is a light one. Cost: about $35–45 for two.
3. 10:30 am — The Heard Museum, 2301 N Central Ave. One of the country's leading museums of American Indian art and culture, open daily 10 am to 4 pm from September through May. Give it two hours; the galleries on contemporary Native artists and the courtyard sculptures are the highlights. Buy tickets online for the current price. Cost: museum admission for two.
4. 12:30 pm — Lunch at the Courtyard Café inside the Heard, then a break. Head back to your hotel or home for the warmest part of the day. Cost: about $35–45 for two.
5. 4:30 pm — The Desert Botanical Garden at golden hour. From October 1 to December 31 the Desert Botanical Garden stays open from 7 am to 10 pm, with adult tickets starting at $32.95. Walk the Desert Discovery Loop as the light goes low and the saguaros go gold, then stay as the paths light up after dark. On Fridays and Saturdays there is often live music in the garden. Cost: from $65.90 for two.
6. 6:45 pm — Dinner at Gertrude's, inside the garden. A sit-down restaurant with a patio facing the garden, so dinner happens without moving the car. Reserve ahead for a weekend table. Cost: about $110–150 for two with a drink each.

Sunday: Tempe Town Lake and a long brunch
1. 8:00 am — A walk or bike ride around Tempe Town Lake. The paths around the lake are flat, mostly paved and busy with runners by mid-morning. Walk the loop between the Mill Avenue Bridge and the pedestrian bridge to the north shore, and look back at Hayden Butte from the water. Cost: free.
2. 10:00 am — Brunch on Mill Avenue. Downtown Tempe's main street is a few minutes' walk from the lake and has plenty of brunch patios that are pleasant in late October. Cost: about $45–60 for two.
3. 11:30 am — Hayden Butte, if your legs are fresh. The short, steep path up the butte at the south end of Mill Avenue gives you a last city view before the drive home. Cost: free.
4. Afternoon — Optional: the Arizona State Fair. The fair is open Thursday through Sunday until November 1. Our day-at-the-fair guide is written for families but has every ticket price, parking and the deal days that work for adults too.
If you have one more evening
Plan your weekend for the first Friday of November and you can add First Friday on Roosevelt Row, when downtown galleries and studios open in the evening (the next one falls on November 6, 2026). The free art walk pairs well with a few downtown spots from our Phoenix date nights under $150.
Traveling with kids instead? The heat-proof Saturday in our Phoenix family plan starts at the same Papago Park area as the garden, and in October you can stay outdoors much longer than it suggests for summer.

What the weekend costs for two
Garden admission: from $65.90. Food over two days (two breakfasts or brunches, lunch at the museum and a garden dinner): about $225–300. Heard Museum admission: check the current price online.
Total without the museum: about $300–380 for two, not counting a hotel. Trim it by swapping the garden dinner for a casual meal in Tempe, which brings the weekend close to $250.
Before you go: garden hours and prices and the Heard Museum's hours were checked on their official sites in October 2026. Restaurant totals are estimates; trail conditions change, so check the city's preserve page before you hike.

FAQ
What is there to do in Phoenix in October?
October is Phoenix's first comfortable month after summer: hike at sunrise, visit the Desert Botanical Garden at sunset (open until 10 pm from October 1), see the Heard Museum, walk around Tempe Town Lake, and go to the Arizona State Fair, which runs Thursday to Sunday until November 1.
Is October a good time to visit Phoenix?
Yes. Highs usually ease from the 90s in early October to the 80s by late month, mornings get cool, and most trails, patios and gardens become comfortable again. It's busier than summer but quieter and cheaper than the peak winter season.
What time is sunset in Phoenix in October?
Because Arizona doesn't observe daylight saving time, sunset in Phoenix moves from about 6:10 pm in early October to around 5:40 pm by October 31. Plan outdoor evening stops, like a garden walk or a viewpoint, for the hour before.
How much is the Desert Botanical Garden in October 2026?
From October 1 to December 31, 2026, adult tickets start at $32.95 and children aged 2 to 17 start at $14.95. During that period the garden is open daily from 7 am to 10 pm, which makes sunset and after-dark visits easy.
Is Piestewa Peak hard to hike?
The Piestewa Peak Summit Trail is short but steep: about 1.2 miles each way with roughly 1,100 feet of climbing over rocky steps. Most fit hikers take 1–2 hours round trip. Go at sunrise, carry water and skip it on extreme heat days.
